What founders should hire for
- End-to-end execution (APIs, data, webhooks, CI/CD — not demo-chat only)
- Clear communication in a live technical interview
- Comfortable building with modern AI tooling (e.g. Claude, Codex) where the role needs it
- Dedicated full-time ownership — not gig tickets
AI developer, AI engineer, or LLM engineer?
The titles overlap. Define the role from the system that must work, then test the technical decisions that system requires.
| Role pattern | What the work usually requires | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| AI developer | Shipping AI features inside a product or business workflow | APIs, data flow, webhooks, interface decisions, testing, and deployment |
| AI engineer | Making AI systems reliable enough for production use | Evaluation, observability, latency, cost, failure handling, and system design |
| LLM engineer | Building retrieval, agent, and model-orchestration systems | Grounding, RAG, tool use, prompt and model versioning, and evaluation harnesses |
Do not choose the title first. Choose the work that has to survive contact with real users and real data.
Interview questions that reveal production ability
- Walk me through an AI system that failed after launch. How did you detect the failure, isolate the cause, and prevent it from returning?
- For this workflow, when would you choose retrieval, fine-tuning, tool use, or ordinary software logic?
- How would you measure output quality before letting the system affect a customer or an internal decision?
- What would you monitor for cost, latency, reliability, and model or prompt changes?
- Debug a realistic API, webhook, or data-flow problem while explaining the assumptions you are testing.
The useful answer is not a list of AI terms. It is a clear decision, the tradeoffs behind it, and evidence that the developer can reach a working result.
How Talented runs AI developer search
Constraint → responsibility → role-specific proof → live interview → shortlist (~14 days). Regions: Philippines, South Africa, Latin America. Pay when you hire. One-time fee. 90-day replacement.
Why the work sample matters more than the résumé
Across 729 paired candidate evaluations, Talented found a 0.03 correlation between résumé scores and role-specific work-sample scores. See the aggregate analysis.
For an AI hire, that means the portfolio and title begin the conversation. A bounded technical problem shows whether the person can reason through your kind of system.
Example of the bar (public site snapshot)
AI Developer profile pattern on scouttalented.com: TypeScript, API design, databases, AWS/GCP, Claude + Codex; strong live interview English; sample test scored 5/5 on troubleshooting, testing, and webhook debugging.
vs Upwork / EOR-only
Upwork = profiles and projects. EOR = legal employment rail. Proof-first = evidence the engineer can do your work before you spend calendar.
Who this is for / not for
For: startups and founder-led product teams needing a dedicated overseas AI/engineer hire.
Not for: one-week prototype freelancers only, or “we only need payroll in country X.”
FAQ
Do you place only “AI wrappers”?
No — responsibility-defined technical roles; AI tooling when the work needs it.
IP / contractor setup?
You engage the hire directly; Talented runs recruiting and proof — confirm legal setup with your counsel.
